Mission

The Centro Interdipartimentale di Ingegneria per i Beni Culturali (CIBeC) of the Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II, legally constituted with D. R. 9425 on 31.7.1992, has been established to foster the development of the scientific research in the field of conservation and restoration of historical, artistic and cultural heritage.

CIBeC aims to:

  • promote coordinated initiatives of interdisciplinary research in the field of conservation, restoration and promotion of Cultural Resources;
  • contribute to the formation and development of a historical culture of Engineering able to match the critical reflection of other cultures;
  • orient research to increase knowledge of the “art of building” in the different historical periods;
  • develop research which enables a scientific approach to the building concept of the ancients, with the traditional materials and technologies;
  • develop research into interactions between the environment and Cultural Resources;
  • develop research addressing system methodologies in conservation;
  • optimise the contribution of new technologies to issues in Cultural Resources;
  • contribute to the elaboration of specific norms for Cultural Resources;
  • ensure that the scientific community operating in the Cultural Resources sector can access the tools, equipment, and competence relative to Engineering for Cultural Resources;
  • promote and oversee the formation of scientific and technical personnel;
  • promote research seminars, post-graduate courses and scientific congresses;
  • foster the publication of books concerning engineering for cultural heritage.

Chairmainship and administration

Prof. Salvatore D’Agostino was the chairman from 1992 to 1998. After him, from 1999 to 2001, there was Prof. Gaetano Alfano. Then again, from 2001 to 2007, Prof. Salvatore D’Agostino. Prof. Giulio Fabricatore was the chairman from 2007 to 2014, and from 2014 to 2021 Prof. Giuseppe Riccio. From 2021 until now the chairman is Prof. Luciano Rosati.
